Comprehensive reporting
Providing full and fair information about our activities is a matter of course to us. We want the general public and our stakeholders to be able to form their own impression.
In July 2009, Merck published its fourth Corporate Responsibility Report. The first report was published in 2003 and succeeded the previous environmental reports (1993, 1995, 1997) and our Responsible Care Report (2000). The second report was published in October 2005, the third in December 2007.
Local activities
In accordance with our corporate values, all Merck sites are called upon to support the communities in which they operate. The executive bodies of the Merck Group need not mandate this by decree: Globally, the companies of the Merck Group take the initiative to make this social commitment at our sites as diverse as it is. They engage in an open dialogue with their neighbors and therefore know where Merck can make the most valuable contributions.
Member of the Global Compact
By joining the UN Global Compact in 2005, we have committed ourselves to fair labor relations, human rights and environmental protection. Aiming to make the global economy more sustainable, the Global Compact supports and propagates ten principles of responsible behavior by global companies.
Stakeholder dialog
Our business operations affect the interests of many people. The Merck Mission Statement, values and strategy are aimed at ensuring Merck’s position as an accepted member´of society. We maintain a continuous dialog with numerous stakeholders: with our business partners, employees, the Merck family, investors, government authorities, associations, neighbors at our sites, non-governmental organizations and many more. It is our goal that the Merck way of doing things in all its activities will be recognized as the unique Merck culture.
We learn from these exchanges, which take place throughout the entire organization. They help us to recognize changing requirements and to assess the impacts they have on the company – whether as opportunities or as risks. In this way, formal and informal interactions impact our decisions.
