Michael Becker was born in 1948 and studied law in Hamburg and Tübingen. After his first state examination in law he was a trainee lawyer in Munich and academic co-worker at the University of Augsburg, where he earned a doctorate.
After his second state examination in law and traineeship in the steel industry, he first joined Klöckner Werke as in-house counsel in 1975, and later headed the law department at the subsidiary Maxhütte. In 1980 he moved to the Finance Division of BASF. As Head of Finance and Administration, he received assignments at subsidiaries in Indonesia, Spain and Great Britain, and he was appointed spokesman for the Management Board of BASF Schwarzheide in Brandenburg. In 1997, he returned to BASF headquarters as Head of Accounting.
He joined Merck in 1998 as Head of Accounting and Controlling. In 2000, he was appointed Member of the Executive Board of Merck KGaA and General Partner of Merck KGaA. In 2002, he was appointed a Member of the newly created Executive Board of E. Merck KG.
